Midweek Thought For Meditation- 6/10/26

Hi Everyone,

The texts this week emphasize that true power is not found in dominance or in the strength of having an arsenal of weapons, but in self-giving service, uprightness, and guiding others by quiet force of a righteous example.
I feel the weight of the words.  Oh God gives us such a heart!

Lead with virtue and concern for others.

Guardianship is not to give an order but to give one’s self.

African Traditional Religions.  Nyika proverb (Kenya and Tanzania)

CHRISTIANITY

You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.  Not so with you.  Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.               Matthew 20: 25-26
ISLAM

Anyone whom Allah has given the authority of ruling some people, and who does not look after them in an honest manner, will never feel even the smell of paradise.                   Hadith of Bukhari
BUDDHISM

When the cattle are crossing, if the bull goes straight, they all go straight because his course is straight.  So among people, if the one who’s reckoned best lives righteously, the others do so too.  The whole land dwells in happiness if the ruler lives right.               Anguttara Nikaya II.75

HINDUISM

One is a light among rulers who is endowed with the four merits of generosity, graciousness, justice and care for the people.                  Tirukkural 390
Is it not the strength of arms that gives success to rulers, but their rule and its uprightness.
Tirukkural 546
Judaism

One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising in a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.                      II Samuel 23. 3-4

CONFUCIANISM

If you govern with the power of virtue, you will be like the North Star.  It just stays in its place while all the other stars position themselves around it.    Analects 2.1

TAOISM

All streams flow to the sea because it is lower than they are.  Humility gives it its power.  If you want to govern the people, you must place yourself below them.  If you want to lead the people, you must learn how to follow them.                Tao Te Ching 66

*Musical links - Love is rooted in respect, compassion, and unity.  As we listen, may we reflect on how love calls each of us to build one another up, and to create relationships where both people can truly flourish.
