Midweek Thought For Meditation- 6/17/26

Hi Everyone,

The next several weeks we will be considering the spiritual quality of Integrity.  This week it’s the integrity of being.  The underlying theme is all about alignment, the hidden depth of the heart, and doing the right thing for its own sake rather than for external reward.  T.S. Eliot wrote, “It is a condition of complete simplicity that costs no less than everything.”

                                Examine your motives.

We should examine ourselves and learn what is the affection and purpose of the heart, for in this way only can we learn what we honestly are.                                  Christian Science. Science and Health, page 8

CHRISTIANITY

The Lord will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.                                   I Corinthians 4:5
The word of God is living and active.  Sharper than any double edged sword, It penetrates even to the dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow, it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.              Hebrews 4:12

ISLAM

Allah will take you to task for that which is intended in your hearts.            Qur’an 2.225
Actions will be judged only by intention…                  Hadith of Bukhari
BUDDHISM

When one intends to move, or one intends to speak, one should first examine one’s own mind and then act appropriately with composure.                                                                                                                                                         Shantideva, A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life 5.47

HINDUISM

Let right deeds be your motive, not the fruit which comes from them. Bhagavad Gita 2.47

Judaism

The Lord searches every heartland and understands every motive behind the thoughts.                                                           I Chronicles 28.9
The purposes of the heart are deep waters, but a person of understanding draws them out.                                                      Proverbs 25.5

CONFUCIANISM

The Master said:  If you look at their intentions, examine their motives, and scrutinize what brings them contentment— how can people hide who they are?  How can they hide who they really are?                   Analects 2.10
If profit guides your actions, there will be no end of resentment.                   Analects 4.12

TAOISM

Reveal your naked self and embrace your original nature; bind your self-interest and control your ambition…           Tao Te Ching 19
The wise are concerned with the depths and not the surface, with the fruit and not the flower.                                              Yao Te Ching 38
