Hi Everyone,
Our meditation this week is on friendship. After a difficult week, Mark admitted to his friend that he was struggling. Nothing could be fixed right away, but his friend stayed-- listened, shared the silence, and walked with him through it. When they parted, the burden was still there, but it was lighter because it was no longer carried alone.
In much the same way, God does not always remove the weight we carry, but He remains with us in it. We are not meant to stand alone. When we experience God's steady love and care in our lives, we are then able to extend that same presence---Patient, faithful, and compassionate---to a friend in need.
Be A Faithful Friend
A friend is like a source of water
during a long journey
African Traditional Religious Nilotie proverb
CHRISTIANITY
Some friends play at friendship, but a true friend sticks closer than one's nearest kin.
Proverbs 18:24
No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. John 15:13
ISLAM
The believers, men and women, are protecting friends one of another, they enjoin the right and forbid the wrong... Qur'an 9.71
BUDDHISM
The one on whom you can rely, like a child sleeping on it's mothers breast, is truly a friend who cannot be parted from you by others. Sutta Nipata 255
HINDUISM
The triple service of friendship is to take the friend out of the wrong path, and to lead him into the right path, and to share in his misfortune. True friendship is that which comes swiftly to the rescue in the hour of trouble, even as the hand goes instinctively to hold the dress, when it chances to slip down in company. Tirukkural 788-789
JUDAISM
A friend loves at all times. Proverbs 17:17
Two are better than one.... For if they fall, one will uphold the other. Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.
A cord of three cannot be broken. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10,12
CONFUCIANISM
Three times daily I ask myself, “Have I been unfaithful in dealing with others? Have I been untrue to friends?” Analects 1.4
TAOISM
Help your brothers and sisters, be faithful to your friends. Hua Hu Ching 52
Be faithful, filial, friendly, and brotherly.
Here are a few musical links to help reinforce the concept and offer encouragement, helping to deepen our understanding of the theme and inviting us to reflect on God's compassion for us, as we are called to extend the same compassion to others.
This first hymn is a golden oldie. Before it became a hymn it was a poem, written in 1855, by Joseph Scriven for his mom who was facing a crisis in her life. He titled it,
“What A Friend We Have In Jesus” https://youtu.be/ZdBVBLxEDJ0
“Footprints In The Sand” https://youtu.be/-kFoiYfrq0M
Poem “Footprints” https://youtu.be/V2_McTm1g8I
“Lean On Me”https://youtu.be/Nx_D0VTHBag
Owen's pick! This song is perfect for our theme. Thank you, Owen.
